An early eighteenth-century colonial invention, carriage (or folding) beds allowed children or visitors to sleep without cluttering already cramped homes. Ornate carriage beds often had bed posts and canopies. They could fold into useful household furniture, such as cabinetry, when not in use. Accompanying the Ingraham family on their migration to New Brunswick, this simple carriage bed folded up to provide extra seating for the family.
