The hearth acted as the center of the home during the late eighteenth century. Women cooked the families’ meals, dried beans and peas for winter storage, and heated water to wash clothes and dishes on the hearth. Situated in the center of the room, this fireplace in the Ingraham house heated both the kitchen and Hannah Ingraham’s bedroom.
