Gary Gallivan will speak at the next meeting of the Old Sydney Society on 23 February 2012 ,7:30 PM at the Centre for Heritage and Science, 225 George St., Sydney.

The title of his talk is "Cape Breton History from a Postcard Perspective 1871-1939."

Ken Donovan has been awarded the 2011 Tom Miller Human Rights Award for his research and publication on the history of slavery in Cape Breton. The awards ceremony took place on 28 January 2012 before a gala ceremony and banquet of 500 people, followed by an outstanding performances by African-Canadian entertainers.

Faculty, students and staff are invited to attend the fifth presentation in the 2011-2012 Atlantic Canada Studies Seminar Series.

Wlad Cichocki, a French and linguistics professor at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, is the speaker. His presentation, "Identifying Regional Dialects of Acadian French from Phonetic Variation," takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m., in room 224 of Tilley Hall.

The Newfoundland Historical Society will hold a free public lecture on Thursday, 26 January 2012, at 8 pm in the Hampton Hall Lecture Theatre, located at the Marine Institute on Ridge Road, St. John's.

This month’s lecturer will be Robert Mellin, and his talk is titled: “Newfoundland Modern: Architecture in the Smallwood Years, 1949-1972.”
